Build Your Tax Career With a Firm That Does More Than Prepare Returns

We are seeking an experienced Senior Tax Accountant / Tax Preparer to join our growing Auburn, Washington team. This is not an entry-level tax preparation position. We are looking for someone with approximately 3–5+ years of professional tax preparation experience who can confidently prepare individual, business, nonprofit, fiduciary, and partnership tax returns while communicating directly with clients.

A CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation is strongly preferred, but we will consider an exceptional tax professional with significant hands-on preparation experience. For the right person, this position offers the opportunity to expand tax-planning expertise and potentially advance into a Tax Manager role.

What You'll Do

  • Prepare federal and state individual and business income tax returns, including Forms 1040, 1065, 1120, 1120-S, 1041, and 990.
  • Prepare complex returns involving small businesses, S corporations, partnerships, investments, and rental real estate.
  • Work with depreciation, basis calculations, K-1s, stock transactions, and multi-state tax issues.
  • Work with real estate investors and professionals on long-term rentals, short-term rentals, real estate professional status, cost segregation, 1031 exchanges, and other real-estate tax strategies.
  • Communicate directly with clients in person, by phone, email, and Zoom.
  • Gather and analyze client information and identify missing or inconsistent information.
  • Assist clients with tax projections, planning opportunities, and legitimate tax-saving strategies.
  • Research federal and state tax questions as needed.
  • Use QuickBooks, secure client portals, AI-enabled tools, and other modern tax and accounting technology.
  • Work collaboratively with an administrative assistant, outsourced staff, and other support staff to efficiently gather information, organize workflow, complete returns, and serve clients.
  • Coordinate with the broader tax and accounting team to provide accurate, timely, and responsive client service.

This position is focused on preparation, planning, and client service and does not initially require reviewing tax returns prepared by other staff.

What We're Looking For

  • Approximately 3–5+ years of professional income tax preparation experience.
  • Significant experience preparing Form 1040 returns.
  • Experience preparing business and entity returns, including Forms 1065, 1120, and 1120-S.
  • Experience with Forms 1041 and 990.
  • Strong understanding of federal income taxation.
  • Experience with rental real estate, Schedule C businesses, depreciation, basis, K-1s, investment transactions, and multi-state returns.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and confidence communicating directly with clients.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple tax returns and deadlines while effectively using administrative and support resources.
  • High standards for accuracy, efficiency, accountability, and client service.
  • A positive, professional, team-oriented attitude and comfort learning new technology.

CPA or EA designation is strongly preferred but not required for an otherwise highly qualified, experienced tax professional.

Experience with Drake Tax Software is strongly preferred, but we are willing to train an experienced tax professional who has used other professional tax preparation software. QuickBooks experience is also desirable.

Compensation

Base salary: $70,000–$90,000, depending upon experience, credentials, technical knowledge, and demonstrated ability.

In addition to base salary, employees may qualify for performance bonuses ranging from $0 to $30,000 annually based upon individual and company performance.

When performance incentives and the value of our extensive employee benefits are considered, an exceptional employee's total compensation and benefits package can exceed $130,000 annually.

Exceptional Benefits

  • 100% employer-paid daycare/childcare.
  • Health insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Paid time off.
  • Paid holidays.
  • Performance-based bonuses.
  • Continuing professional education and professional development opportunities.
  • Flexible scheduling.
  • Approximately 50% hybrid work opportunity outside tax season.
  • Tax-season meals.
  • Opportunity for continued professional and career advancement.

Schedule & Work Environment

This is a full-time, year-round position based in Auburn, Washington. Outside of tax season, the position offers approximately 50% hybrid work flexibility.

During tax season, employees should anticipate approximately 50 hours per week and primarily in-office work to support our clients and team during our busiest period. Outside tax season, we return to a normal full-time schedule.

Why Join Our Firm?

We are an established and growing tax and accounting firm serving thousands of clients and preparing thousands of tax returns each year. Our clients include individuals, entrepreneurs, real estate professionals, real estate investors, landlords, and small-business owners. Our volume and diverse client base give tax professionals exposure to sophisticated tax situations and planning opportunities that may not be available in a traditional small tax practice.

We also believe the future of tax preparation includes technology. Our firm actively explores and adopts AI, automation, secure portals, and other technologies that can improve efficiency and allow our professionals to spend more time solving problems and serving clients.

Our tax professionals are supported by administrative assistants, outsourced team members, and other support staff, allowing experienced preparers to focus more of their time on tax work, planning, client communication, and professional growth.

Most importantly, we are looking for someone interested in building a career—not simply completing another tax season. A successful person in this position can expand into more sophisticated tax planning, assume greater responsibility, and potentially advance into a Tax Manager position as the firm continues to grow.

Who Will Thrive Here?

  • Takes pride in getting the return right.
  • Works efficiently without sacrificing accuracy.
  • Takes ownership of deadlines and commitments.
  • Enjoys talking with clients and explaining tax issues.
  • Can work independently while also collaborating effectively with administrative, outsourced, and professional staff.
  • Knows how to appropriately delegate and use support resources so higher-level tax work receives the attention it deserves.
  • Wants to continue learning and is comfortable with technology and change.
  • Enjoys finding legitimate opportunities to help clients reduce taxes.
  • Wants an opportunity to grow professionally rather than remaining in the same role indefinitely.

Ready for Your Next Opportunity?

We are looking to fill this position as soon as possible. If you are an experienced tax professional looking for a long-term opportunity with competitive compensation, exceptional benefits, hybrid flexibility outside tax season, direct client interaction, sophisticated tax work, strong administrative support, and an opportunity to grow into a Tax Manager role, we would like to hear from you.

Apply today and tell us about your tax preparation experience, the types of returns you have prepared, and what you are looking for in your next tax career opportunity.
